How to reach Lucca

By Plane

The nearest airports from Lucca are Pisa International Airport "Galileo Galilei" and Florence International Airport "Amerigo Vespucci".

From Pisa Airport to Lucca

The easiest way to get to Lucca is to take a taxi just outside the airport for a cost of approximately 50 €. As an alternative, immediately next to the airport you will notice a little train station: twice per hour a train leaves in order to connect Pisa Airport to Pisa Central Station where you will find connections to Lucca Station.

Another way to get to Lucca is to take an interurban bus of the "Autolinee Lazzi" leaving from the airport. The journey will take approximately one hour and you can check the schedule visiting the page: Pisa airport - Lucca by bus.

From Florence Airport to Lucca

Once again the easiest way to get to Lucca is to take a taxi just outside the airport for an approximate cost of no less than 80 €. The first alternative is to take a city line bus to the Train Station of Santa Maria Novella, in order to take a train connection to Lucca. There is a bus leaving every 30 minutes from the airport and you can get more information at the following websites: http://www.ataf.net/en/ataf.aspx?idC=2&LN=en-US. The whole journey (bus+train) will take approximately two hours.

The second alternative to get to Lucca is to take an bus of the "Autolinee Lazzi"; there is a dedicated bus stop immediately next to the airport and you can visualize the schedule of the connections on the following website (in Italian): www.lazzi.it. The journey will take approximately one hour and forty-five minutes.

By Car

From the Highway to IMT

We recommend to take the highway's exit "Lucca Est"; at the crossroads turn left in order to enter Viale Europa; go straight on until you reach a roundabout where you will turn right and take Viale Carducci; follow the road, keeping the marvellous walls on your left until you arrive in Piazzale Ricasoli, where the train station is located. Here you should turn right, still keeping the walls on your left, and go straight on until you see Porta Elisa, a white marble entrance door to the town. As soon as you enter the town you are in Via Elisa, where you can follow the directions in order to leave the car in one of the many parking lots nearby, while Via San Micheletto, where the conference venue is located, is just two hundred meters on your left.

By Train

Lucca Train Station is directly connected to the main Tuscan provinces and tourist locations such as: Pisa, Viareggio, Montecatini, Pistoia, Florence, Aulla. You can check connections and timetables at the website of the Italian State Railways website: www.trenitalia.com

Local Information

Lucca and its surroundings are rich in history and, at the same time, open to the future.

Throughout the years, this medieval Tuscan city has maintained the characteristics of the small capital it has been almost up to the unification of Italy. The streets and piazzas of the historic centre, the churches and buildings, and its overall urban layout show how smooth and uninterrupted its development has been over the centuries, providing an ideal setting for a campus within which experiences can be shared and personal contact can be enhanced.

The Renaissance city walls and the natural amphitheatre of the hills beyond combine in a perfect blend of nature and the work of man.

Beyond the hills, the beaches of Versilia and the mountains of Garfagnana are uniquely attractive by their variety and closeness to the town.

Lucca has good connections to other large towns, to cities and other university centers of the region, and it is close to both Pisa and Florence international airports.

Moving Around

By Car

20 km from Pisa and 70 Km from Florence, Lucca is located in a suitable position to get almost everywhere in Tuscany within few hours. The historical center (mainly a pedestrian area) is closed to private vehicles. The best way to visit Lucca is, actually, on foot. There are many parking lots located near the principal access routes and public transport facilities: you can check on the map the most convenient parking for you.

By Train or bus

If you don't have your own mean of transportation you can rely on Clap buses (www.clapspa.it) or Lazzi buses (www.lazzi.it). Both lines are based at Piazzale Verdi. Clap is dedicated to local transportation (within Lucca province), while Lazzi destinations take you also outside the province. A scenic railway line ducks in and out of tunnels alongside the Serchio River - you ride under an arch of the Devil's Bridge - and goes out onto the Lunigiana plain to Aulla (www.trenitalia.it).
